Chris
Chambers Orchestra Instrument Repair
Chris Chambers specializes in the repair and restoration of orchestral
instruments and their bows. He is a fully trained violinmaker
with over twenty years of professional experience working in violin
shops. He built his first violin in 1987 with Boyd Poulsen in
his shop in San Mateo, Ca. Mr. Poulsen was himself a student of
Hans Weisshaar of L.A Ca., who was an internationally recognized
expert in the field of restoration. During his time at Cremona
Violin Makers and Dealers of San Francisco from 1986 to 1993,
Chris was instructed in all types of repair and restoration procedures.
While there, he was also able to see many examples of the work
of some of the finest classical makers. Chris traveled to Cremona,
Italy in 1987 to see firsthand over 100 violins, violas and cellos
made by Stradivari that were brought together for an exhibit honoring
the 200th anniversary of his death. During this period Chris also
attended extensive restoration workshops in Oberlin, Ohio two
years running. In 1993 Chris built another violin with Thomas
Oliver Croen while working as an assistant in his Richmond Ca.
workshop. Tom has won medals for his work at Violin Society of
America competitions. To date, Chris has completed 6 violins.
Chris also has an interest in guitar building. He built a guitar
with well-known bay area guitar builder Ervin Somogyi during the
late 80’s, and just this year completed another, a steel
string cutaway of his own design.
Chris continues to pursue his craft; he is currently working on
a new violin, and developing plans for another guitar. e-mail:
