Today we have three locations in Normal, Champaign, and Springfield, and our community stretches from I-80 south to Effingham.

The heart of our business is band & orchestra; The Music Shoppe works with over 400 schools across Illinois. We also carry guitars, drums, sound equipment, pianos, print music, and more. Additionally, we have the area's largest repair department and lesson studios. We truly are a one-stop shoppe for any musician.

Orchestral String Luthier

Full-Time | Normal, IL

The Music Shoppe, a NAMM Top 100 dealer and long-standing member of NASMD, is seeking an experienced orchestral string luthier for the Normal, Illinois location.  Serving downstate Illinois since 1961, The Music Shoppe has a history of excellent repair service and support for orchestral string musicians.

The home of Illinois State University and Illinois Wesleyan University, Bloomington-Normal is a vibrant source of repair business with 2 outstanding Schools of Music, numerous professional players and teachers, and orchestral programs in all public and some private schools. The community is diverse and arts supportive;  large enough to offer many amenities, and only 2 hours from Chicago or St. Louis for broader offerings in music and the arts.

Rental Instrument Preparer

Part-Time | Normal, IL

Responsibilities:

      • Clean and polish the exterior of woodwind and percussion instruments
      • Accessorize instrument cases with necessary supplies
      • Monitor inventory levels of accessories 
      • Transport instruments between the repair department and warehouse

Qualifications:

      • Previous experience with band instruments
      • Strong attention to detail
      • Works well independently
      • Able to perform repetitive light lifting, 15lbs or less

Warehouse Assistant/Driver - Seasonal

Seasonal | Normal, IL

Warehouse Assistant/Driver Responsibilities:

      • Load and unload inventory from the delivery van. 
      • Drive regularly scheduled routes between stores in Normal, Champaign, and Springfield on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings & afternoons. 
      • Assist with other deliveries as required.
      • Assist with receiving of inventory
      • Help maintain warehouse organization

Qualifications:

      • High school education or equivalent
      • Valid driver’s license required
      • Clean driving record
      • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs
      • Basic computer skills. We will train you on our industry-specific inventory software, but a working knowledge of email and Microsoft Office is required.

      • Dependable and on-time 
      • Works well independently

Educational Sales Representative

Full-Time | Champaign, IL

Responsibilities:

      • Maintain & develop relationships with music educators within an assigned territory. 
      • Maintain a regular driving schedule in order to visit 50+ schools on a weekly basis.
      • Respond to the needs of educators with the assistance of in-store support staff.
      • Carefully transport and track inventory on its way to and from schools. 
      • Load and unload transport vans, frequently lifting items weighing up to 50lbs. Occasional heavier lifting is required. 
      • Coordinate and host in-school events to help beginning students test instruments & sign up for rentals. 
      • Explain our instrument rental programs to parents and help them fill out paperwork.
      • Promote step-up instruments and accessories within schools, and coordinate occasional evening events to allow advancing players to try out new gear.
      • Represent The Music Shoppe at major school music events such as marching band festivals, the Illinois Music Educators Conference, and Solo & Ensemble contest. 

Qualifications:

      • Degree in music or professional musical experience. 
      • A demonstrated knowledge of music education in schools, including band, orchestra, and general music. 
      • Previous experience in sales and/or customer service.
      • A valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
      • Basic computer skills. We will train you on our industry-specific sales software, but applicants should be familiar with Google Workspace (Gmail, Docs, Sheets) and/or Microsoft Office (Word, Excel).

Qualities we look for:

      • Broad musical knowledge. A background in band & orchestra is required.
      • Desire to help students as well as music educators.
      • Strong attention to detail.
      • Ability to communicate accurately and effectively.
      • Showing an eagerness to learn.

      • Guide families through our instrument rental programs.
      • Maintain an in-stock selection of varied print music.
      • Communicate with teachers to ensure our print selection meets their needs.
      • Search for and order in print music by special request. 
      • Place and receive orders.
      • Maintain product displays and organization.

Qualifications:

      • Degree in music or long-term musical experience. 
      • Previous experience in sales, customer service, or inventory management.
      • Intermediate computer skills. We will train you on our industry-specific sales software, but applicants should have a working knowledge of Google Workspace (Gmail, Docs, Sheets) and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel).

Responsibilities:

  • Listen to the needs of the customer and make recommendations based on your expertise.
  • Guide families through our instrument rental programs, from explaining the features to filling out the paperwork.
  • Evaluate new merchandise.
  • Maintain product displays by restocking, cleaning, organizing, and performing routine upkeep on instruments.

Qualifications:

  • Degree in music or equivalent professional experience. Background with orchestral string instruments preferred but not required.
  • One year experience in sales/customer service.
  • Competency with basic computer skills. We will train you on our industry-specific sales software, but familiarity with email, Word, and Excel is required.
