Smart Start: Early Childhood Music

(A Royal Conservatory of Music Program)

Smart Start is a research-backed early childhood music program designed for children ages 0–5. Through music, movement, and play, Smart Start nurtures developing brains while building a joyful foundation for learning, connection, and creativity.

Led by Dr. Afrim Shabani—Awarded Teacher of Distinction (2023) by the Royal Conservatory of Music— Smart Start combines neuroscience with more than 25 years of teaching experience. Dr. Shabani is a Nationally Certified Teacher of Music and an Advanced Teacher Specialist with the Royal Conservatory of Music.

Each Smart Start class supports early cognitive growth by enhancing memory, language development, and classroom readiness while strengthening empathy and social connection through group music-making.

Built-In Literacy Development

RCM Smart Start naturally integrates the core components of early literacy into every class. Through play-based activities, singing, movement, and group engagement, children are introduced to the five foundational pillars of reading:

  • Phonemic Awareness – Recognizing and playing with individual sounds
  • Phonics – Understanding sound–letter relationships
  • Fluency – Developing rhythm, timing, and expressive communication
  • Vocabulary – Expanding language through songs and stories
  • Comprehension – Making meaning through listening and engagement

Smart Start gives children a confident, joyful introduction to music while supporting early reading, speech and language development, and overall brain growth—where music truly meets brain power.

*Classes run 3 times a year for 16 sessions each, starting : 1st Week in June - 2nd Week in August - 2nd Week in January
