While each manufacturer places serial numbers in slightly different spots, there are a few common locations to check depending on the type of instrument you own.

Guitars & Basses

Look on the back of the headstock or on the neck plate.

Orchestral Strings

Look through the opening on the top of the instrument (the f-hole). The serial number is usually printed on a label inside.

Woodwinds

Check the backside of the instrument, often near the bottom of a joint. On Jupiter flutes, it may also be located under the bracing near the top key.

Brass

Look on the sides of the valves. For trombones, the serial number is often found on a portion of the handslide.
